Kohima: Advisor of School Education, Dr. Kekhrie Yhome stated that fast food has taken over traditional slow food today, while chemical contaminants in food are invading the human body.

He was speaking during the inaugural programme of the Inter-District Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) / Government High School (GHS) Tournament 2023 at IG Stadium in Kohima on Thursday.

Yhome recalled that Maggi products were first introduced in Kohima in 1986 wherein the company freely distributed the instant noodle packs to students. He said they were practicing simple healthy eating habits like enjoying boiled pumpkin or left over rice with tea whenever they returned from their school.

However, of late, he asserted that many have replaced traditional slow food with fast food while their bodies are invaded by food items containing chemicals which are brought home from markets and shops.

Emphasising that physical health is another form of literacy, the advisor expressed hope that the students would participate in the event with fervour and true spirit of sportsmanship.

Informing that as many as 524 students are participating in different disciplines in the two-day sports meet, he expressed hope that they would organise the event in a grander manner also in the days to come.

He apprised that there are 44 government higher secondary schools and 247 government high schools in the state, in which representatives from all districts except Zunheboto and Shamator are taking part in the competition in the state capital.

Yhome informed that they would also be looking forward to conducting similar activities for boys and girls from lower classes in the district level.

Terming Northeastern states as a “hub for sports,” he apprised about the neighbouring state Manipur which has world class sports facilities to host international sporting events.

As such, he expressed hope that the government of Nagaland would follow suit by building better sports infrastructure in the state. “This is the only ground (IG Stadium) which we can be proud of,” he said.

Affirming how sportspersons are not only bringing laurels but earning enough for themselves, he hoped that people from North-eastern states would excel in sports and be at par with rest of their counterparts in other countries.

Similarly, Yhome urged the youngsters from Nagaland to strive in games and sports to bring fame and name to their state.

Stressing on the wellness of the mind through physical activities, he cautioned about various forms of attraction which come through bad habits.

Applauding the department of School Education for giving a platform for students from all over the state to come together and compete, he hoped that the event would go well without any eventuality.

Observing that sportspersons often tend to forget their necessary routine once tournaments are over, Yhome reminded them of the need to develop consistency in their pursuits in order to scale greater heights.

Further, he wished the best to each sportsperson to bring glory to their school and district.

Vitsolie Keyho, physical education officer, School Education, informed that various disciplines like football, 1500m and bamboo stilt race for boys while volleyball and 800m race for girls are being conducted.

Both boys and girls are also taking part in 100m and 200m races including shot put, discus throw as well as long jump.

On Thursday, Thavaseelan K, Principal Director of School Education will attend the valedictory function at 3 pm.

The ongoing tournament is funded by Samagra Shiksha Nagaland.
