Farmers trained on nutritional benefits of millets

Resource persons and farmers during the training on ‘Nutritional importance of millets’ on December 3.

Dimapur, Dec. 4 (EMN): With an objective to create awareness for the ensuing International Year of Millets 2023, the district management unit FOCUS-IFAD Project, Kohima district, organised training for lead farmers on ‘Nutritional importance of millets’ on December 3.

An update informed that the training was conducted in collaboration with the ICAR-Indian Institute of Millets Research (IIMR) project based at School of Agricultural Sciences and Rural Development (SASRD), Medziphema.

It stated that associate professor of Genetics and Plant Breeding and resource person, Dr. Pankaj Shah, highlighted about the importance of millets in the present day. Stating that the lifestyle of the present generation is missing out on the various benefits of having millets in its diet, Shah apprised the farmers on the nutritional importance of millets and also on different types of millets cultivated namely major millets, minor millets and pseudo millets.

Among various types of millets, special emphasis was laid on foxtail millets and sorghum. The deputy agriculture officer, Kekhrieletuo Yhome, in his keynote address, encouraged the farmers to use the training as a tool to go forward and to share among their fellow farmers about the benefits of millets. The DAO also stressed on cultivation of millets for nutritional as well as food safety for the generations.
