Kohima, Oct. 1 (EMN): The advisor for SCERT Toshi Wungtung inaugurated the eight edition of the Nagaland Spelling Bee Championship 2019, on October 2 at the Capital Convention Centre in Kohima.

In his address to the event, Wungtung asserted that ‘language is a lingual chemistry’ with complexities. ‘There is no mono language,’ he said.

“Language and words are a format of the mind you have, as you’re born, you’re born in mind, you’re not born in words, you’re not born in scripts,” he said. He said that words are to be spoken correctly and most importantly they should be spoken in a way that is understandable.

Wuntung opined that language is a form of expression to be understood and also be confident in the form of relationships.

While speaking about the importance of having good command over spelling he maintained that it is a requisite for grammar in the form of phonetics, and description or tone. Although varied from culture to society, he said it is an expression of temperament and personality nonetheless.

In other matters, the legislator claimed that ‘quality in education in the state is picking up gradually towards quality society and quality education.’

Delivering the keynote address was the additional director of State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Yevito Sema. He said the purpose of the competition was multi-dimensional with the intention to ‘bring comprehensive development’ in the life of the students.

Sema maintained that the mode of communication, speaking and writing, must be exercised cautiously as the advancement of communication and technology has an impact on languages especially in children.

Further, the official asserted that the programme intended to empower and develop the students in a way that will enable good writing skills and speaking besides helping the students gain self-confidence.

Twenty two schools from Kohima, Dimapur, Zunheboto and Wokha participated in the preliminary round of the competition.
