Deo Nukhu exhorts students to maintain identity, heritage

[dropcap]K[/dropcap]ohima Tsüswüzu Students’ Union (KTSU) held its 17th annual session and freshers’ social on Saturday at the State Academy Hall, Kohima under the theme ‘Creating Connections: Co-operating with competition’. Parliamentary secretary for Higher Education & SCERT, Deo Nukhu who graced the occasion as the chief guest, spoke on the importance of maintaining ones traditional identity.
Stating that the Chesezu (Tsüswüzu) village of Phek district is one of the oldest traditional villages as it finds mention in the historical books of Nagaland, Nukhu urged upon the student community of the village to maintain their historic heritage and contribute the knowledge which they gain from their education towards uplifting the name of their native place.
He also called upon the youth to respect and preserve their native dialect as language brings people together, uniting and creating sense of belonging and upholds one’s culture.
While congratulating the successful HSLC, HSSLC and NPSC candidates of the union, the parliamentary secretary encouraged them to pursue their studies and responsibilities with perseverance and according to God’s guidance.
He said that education has become very competitive, however success will come to those who maintain self-control and discipline.
Besides those who passed the HSLC and HSSLC examinations in 2013, the KTSU also feted successful NPSC candidates of 2013 from Chesezu village- Veduzo Sasü (BDO) and Müzivoyi Ringa (SDO civil), B.Sc. Agriculture (Nagaland University) gold medalist Müziselu Ringa, and Mürisalu Swuro for securing Top-8 position in B.Sc. Botany (Nagaland University).
Delivering words of inspiration to students and civil service aspirants, Veduzo Sasü said that other than hard work, there is no shortcut to success.
Stating that he regretted not taking high school and college studies seriously, he encouraged young students to start planning for their future as early as possible.
“It takes a lot of patience and determination to achieve one’s goal,” he said adding that parents should encourage their children to pursue their own ambitions and give them space to think and grow for their future.
Besides KTSU members, others who attended the programme included Ex-MLA Nüzota Swuro, director School Education, Zaveyi Nyekha, BJP ST morcha national vice president Johny Rengma, members and elders from Chesezu village council and Chesezu Welfare Association Kohima members.

 Tetso College celebrates freshers’ day

The Tetso College celebrated its freshers’ day with regale of entertaining programme consisting of cultural extravaganza, unique performances like a Korean fan dance, fashion shows, skits, mesmerizing songs and speeches from the students on August 9.
Speaking on behalf of the chief guest, Khalong Ao, officiating Director of Higher Education conveyed regret that parliamentary secretary of Higher Education and SCERT, Deo Nukhu, could not attend the function due to ill health.
Khalong congratulated the college for the vast strides it has made in terms of development and results and becoming one of the few NAAC accredited colleges in Nagaland. He exhorted the students to spend their time wisely and used relevant and humorous real life stories.
The college facilitated its HSSLC topper in Arts stream Intuale Raimi, Yonglemju in Commerce who were awarded scholarships of Rupees 2000 and 5000 respectively.
Both the college toppers are continuing their undergraduate studies in Honours programmes at Tetso College. The college also secured the 3rd rank in Sociology Honours through Khesheli Aye who is currently applying for a Post Graduate Programme in Nagaland University.
Moreover, the college awarded cash bonuses and citations to faculty who managed to produce 100% pass percentage in their subjects and whose students scored distinctions in the final exams.
Speaking on behalf of the college administration, Kvulo Lorin, director-administration pointed out why Tetso College does not organize a ‘Mr and Miss Fresher’ contest. He specifically said each and every student is a Mr & Miss fresher and every new student is equal regardless of their community, background or marks when they enter Tetso College.
The departments of Commerce and English also announced the start of communication skills classes and coaching classes for students and working professionals. The commerce coaching classes would be for students of Class 9 to Degree level for mathematics and accountancy subjects.
