Dimapur, May 13 (EMN): The Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) has hit out at the Rising People’s Party (RPP) for submitting a memorandum to the governor of Nagaland, seeking imposition of President’s Rule citing unabated corruption in the state.

In a press statement, the NDPP said it was shocked that a registered political party had demanded dismissal of elected government, saying that such a move goes against the very fabric of democracy.

The RPP has levelled several unfounded allegations against the democratically elected government while demanding the imposition of President’s Rule in the state, said the party, adding that the allegations are “baseless, misleading and cannot warrant invoking Article 365 of the Constitution of India”.

“The Constitution of India, on which the very fabrics of democracy of this great nation are enshrined in, cannot be treated in such a flippant manner! Simply raising allegations of corruption and non disbursement of salaries are not reasons enough to invite invoking Article 365 of the Constitution of India,” it stated.

“The RPP have alleged that the present United Democratic Alliance (UDA) government, an opposition-less government is an undemocratic one. Nowhere in the Constitution of India does it say that an opposition-less government/house is illegal or not permissible,” it added.

Maintaining that the members of the 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) were democratically elected by the people, the NDPP said the demand for dissolution of the Assembly is against the very tenets of a democracy and disrespects the Constitution of India and the people of Nagaland who had elected their representatives.

“The NDPP stands committed in our promise of transparency, accountability, meritocracy and good governance. We shall not waver in our commitments to the people of the State by succumbing to baseless and misleading allegations of our opponents and detractors and appeal to the people to continue their support to the party and the government which has remained unwavering over the last more than four years,” read the statement.
