College girl killed in Ukhrul blast; 3 injured

A college going girl was killed while three others including another woman leader sustained injury when suspected militants exploded a bomb believed to an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Ukhrul town of Manipur on Wednesday. The deceased has been identified as T Lamsophy (25), a student of Pettigrew College Ukhrul, from Longpi Khullen village of the district.
The incident took place in front of Nitu Glass, a hardware store located in the heart of view land, the busiest market of the hill town around 5.30 pm, sources said.
The injured – Tina (45), former president of Tangkhul Sanao Long, apex body of Tangkhul women organization, Rajendra, proprietor of Nitu Glass and his salesman Godu – have been shifted to the district hospital. Later, Tina was taken to Imphal for further treatment, reports added.
Suspecting it as an IED explosion, a police official attached to the Ukhrul district police headquarters when contacted on phone said they are examining the incident. A case has been registered in connection with the incident and investigation is on, he added. But the reason behind exploding the bomb during the busy rush hour of the town is yet to be ascertained. No armed group operating in the state has claimed responsibility for the blast till the time of filing this report.
