Dimapur, June 19 (EMN): The NSCN (IM) on Saturday stated that “collection of taxes by a government from its citizen is a legitimate right and it is nothing illegal at all”.

The statement came close on the heels of reports that insurgency groups were asking for their share of “Covid fund”, which several groups including the NSCN (IM) had denied.

“It is pointless on the part of the critics to level false allegations on collection of taxes by the Government of the People’s Republic of Nagalim (GPRN),” read the press statement from the MIP of the NSCN (IM).

It added that “even the representatives of the government of India who are engaged in political dialogue with NSCN leaders recognise this right (of collecting tax)”.

However, the group maintained that it is against extortions and excesses “if ever committed by the collectors” and it has to deal such cases with strong hands.

The NSCN (IM) went on to state that ‘the Naga national right is inherent, not a generous gift of the constitution of any country, and that it can never be robbed off by any force’. It added that the national rights of many people had been suppressed in the past but they rose and regained their rights through revolution or negotiations.

It stated that adversaries are using non-issue to settle their score against NSCN.

“NSCN focuses on issues and we can say we have made commendable achievements to some extend on vital issues of both internal and external affairs (matters). We are not new to the restlessness of critics and adversaries trying to smear NSCN’s image in the eye of the world with destructive scheme of things,” it stated.

It went on to state that “we run our government and conduct affairs of the state on the basis of collective decision-making culture” where the Collective Leadership consisting of top leaders consult the members on matters of national importance and the chief of Naga Army on security matters.
