Dimapur, March 19 (EMN):
Christian Institute of Health Sciences and Research (CIHSR) became the fourth hospital in Nagaland to have a blood centre, which was inaugurated at the hospital premises on Saturday.

Dr. Joy Mammen, professor and head of Transfusion Medicine and Immunohaematology department at CMC Vellore, spoke on the importance of triangular relationship for the success of a blood centre. The three components of the triangle, according to Dr. Mammen, was that blood should be available on the shelf in case of an emergency, while the second was the availability of blood donor source, and the third was to serve as a motivation for others if they are unable to donate blood.

Dr. Mammen urged to optimise the triangle for the blood centre to function stating that blood transmission is an integral aspect of modern medicine that cannot be separated. Dr. Mammen also advised the medical department to wisely and effectively manage the blood centre.

Director of CIHSR, Dr. Sedevi Angami, said that establishing a blood centre is a major milestone achievement, which is the fourth blood centre in all of Nagaland. He stated that many lives have been lost due to blood shortage during emergencies and added that it should be their responsibility to ensure such cases are not repeated.

Dr. Sedevi also stressed on the need for a quality laboratory service, which was chronically ignored by the Indian government. He urged the government and other private sectors to collaborate in order to improve laboratory standards.

The technical supervisor, KG Gaikhonlungpou, informed that inspection was done by the state and central drug controller on October 20, 2021, and approval was received on February 8, 2022. He stated that the blood centre at CIHSR could collect, store, and prepare various blood components and added that the centre would be open 24×7 with blood donation timing from 8 am to 4 pm.

He further informed that it has planned to introduce Apheresis and also to set up CIHSR blood centre as referral centre for training of blood technologists and doctors of Nagaland in future.
