Imphal, Aug. 28 (EMN): The police team of a district in Manipur under the overall supervision of the Superintendent of Police took up safety driving campaign and spreading awareness on the need to wear helmet for bikers.
The District Traffic Control Police (DTCP) personnel of Churachandpur district headquarters, 65km south of Imphal, distributed sweets to the riders without helmets and counselled them on safety tips.

The DTCP personnel checked the riders, made them stop their vehicles and push it to the next point where some traffic personnel would give them some advice/counselling and offer them sweets / toffees in the ongoing campaign which was started since last two weeks and it is being taken up at different locations of Churachandpur town on a daily basis.

The idea is to check those bikes/ two wheeler riders, who are moving around in the district headquarter without wearing helmets – either they do not have a helmet or they have forgotten to wear it, SP Amrita Sinha of Churachandpur district, said. Imposing some fines is not bringing any change and our intention is to bring them some change and the response is positive so far.

The DTCP in charge, James Lianzagou Vaiphei is currently implementing the campaign in the backdrop of frequent two-wheeler accidents, some resulting into fatalities in the hill town. Interestingly, 20,403 two wheelers and 52,82 cars out of total 32,120 vehicles are registered at District Transport Office till date.

Sinha who joined as SP of the district about two months back after posting in other parts of the state said that it is also an attempt to spread the awareness on basic road safety rules and we’re going to do it for some time. After all it is for their safety and their safety is prime importance for us.

Last month, the Lok Sabha passed the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill 2019, to amend the provisions under the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988. The Bill aims to enforce stricter penalties for road traffic violations.
