Chizami women society observes women’s day

Dimapur, Dec. 20 (EMN): Chizami Women Society (CWS) organised the 9th Chizami women’s day programme on December 20 at Theza in Chizami village with the theme ‘women of integrity.’

The event brought together about 700 participants comprising Chizami women and girls, community leaders representing the village council, village development board, students’ union, youth society and well-wishers, an update from the society stated on Friday.

Highlighting on key achievements of the society over the past years, CWS chairperson Kezunyipeu Tsuhah had attributed the achievements to the tireless efforts of her predecessors, incumbent officials and the consistent support and encouragement rendered by the village council and other departments. The achievements included asset creation (acquiring land and building houses), women’s representation and participation in apex decision making – the village council, wage parity, observance of ‘Nitsumi Khuke-za’ (girl child day) in Chizami.

She also challenged the women to develop entrepreneurial skills and encouraged them to improve their farming knowledge especially in diversifying their cultivated crops.

Dwelling on the theme ‘Women of Integrity,’ the guest speaker Rukewelo T Mero, Superintendent of Police (SP), Peren, has insisted inculcating values of discipline, diligent, hard working. He also urged the members to be healthy and make others healthy, have a positive attitude towards life and be self-reliant to be called a woman of integrity.

Citing an adage ‘An idle mind is a devil’s workshop,’ he encouraged the gathering to be diligent and engage in productive activities like growing own food for families and stop the consumption of market food.

Also exhorting the gathering, former chairperson Wepeteu Naro, lauded the progress and achievements of women and girls in diverse fields. She challenged the women to focus on strengthening leadership at various levels. To enable the society recognise their worth and potentials, she stated that it should begin with the recognition of their own self-worth and be a trustworthy person. She further encouraged imparting skills to both boys and girls and not distinguish on the basis of gender.

Other highlights of the programme included ‘Node-kede Chelie’ (agricultural work song) competition, open discussion, special performances, and report presentations. 

It may be mentioned that CWS was established in 1984 with the objectives to protect and advance women’s rights, work towards overall development of women and girls, safeguard and promote local culture and ecology. After commemorating its 25th anniversary, CWS initiated the observance of annual Chizami Women’s Day since 2010.

The annual gathering was organised to provide a common platform for all women and girls of Chizami to discuss, dialogue, educate on relevant issues affecting them and their community at large, besides showcasing their skills, knowledge and talents.
