Bus stands made of bamboo expected to be used in Imphal soon

Imphal, Sep. 21 (EMN): A model of “bus shelter” made of bamboo was developed using modern application and technology during the five-day bamboo construction workshop at the Crafts Complex Patsoi part-I in the outskirts of Imphal.

Once the model is approved, it is expected to be used as  bus stands in and around Imphal city soon, said a bamboo campaigner.

The workshop was held under the aegis of South Asia Bamboo Foundation (SABF), Bamboo Forum of India, Building material Technology Promotion Council (BMPTC) and Manipur State Bamboo Mission, Forest department, as part of observing the 10th edition of the World Bamboo Day (WBD).

The WBD was observed in the state on September 18.

Presentations on bamboo designs, laminates, furniture , plantation , value chain , environments and bamboo constructions were given by design expert Sukumar Haobam, C S Susanth of National Institute of Design (NID) Bangalore, PB Goswami from Jorhat, environmentalist Salam Rajesh, and chief executive officer of SABF Kamesh Salam.

Around  35 young artisans, bamboo construction workers, entrepreneurs, architects from Manipur participated in the Workshop.

Apart from giving training on designing of frames and trusses, architectural designs, engineering of structures, introduction to anatomy of bamboo, proper preservation and grading methods, drying, storage and targeted markets were also imparted to the during the workshop, an update from the organisers said.
