Bank rush: Rs 12 cr transactions in Dimapur banks in two days

DIMAPUR, NOVEMBER 11 : People across the country on Friday continued to swarm their local bank branches to deposit the now demonetised old Rs 500 and Rs 1000 banknotes and exchange them for the newly minted versions.

As was the case yesterday, banks at Dimapur also witnessed similar scenarios as people queued up early Friday morning outside the banks amid security arrangements. The State Bank of India (SBI) branches, as expected, had the longest queues.

An SBI official on Friday told Eastern Mirror, that as of November 10 and 11, at least Rs 12 crore consisting of the new Rs 2000 banknotes as well as currencies of lower denominations (excluding Rs 500 notes) have been distributed to all banks across Dimapur for transaction purpose.
He also informed that at SBI banks alone, 3000 customers had exchanged the old Rs 500 and Rs 1000 banknotes on the first day, November 10. On Friday also, no less than 2000 customers exchanged their old banknotes at SBI banks, he informed.

As per RBI guidelines, for now, the maximum amount that a customer can exchange from banks is Rs 4000. For deposits, however, there are no limits.

The source also informed that SBI would be accepting the old Rs 500 and Rs 1000 banknotes, till December 31 this year, when customers repay bank loans. The SBI employees were still working at 9 pm on Friday.

Also, according to officials at the SBI Regional Branch Office Dimapur, they have received Rs 140 crore in the new Rs 2000 banknotes for distribution. The Regional Branch Office at Dimapur covers Peren SBI Branch, Lerie SBI Branch, Phek SBI Branch and Kiphire SBI Branch, besides Dimapur. They were yet to receive the new Rs 500 banknotes, it was informed.

Officials of SBI Regional office Mokokchung, on Friday informed that the chest branches of SBI have arranged remittance and new notes would be available from November 12, adding SBI branch of Wokha has already received new banknotes today.

The SBI Region office based in Mokokchung looks after six chest branches namely, Mokokchung, Tuensang, Zunheboto, Wokha , Mon and Longleng. Officials from SBI also disclosed that the new notes arriving on November 12 would be of Rs 2000 denomination.

Officials also informed that the bank was currently giving exchange at their disposal on ten, twenty, fifty and hundred rupees denominations.

Officials also added that the bank was extending its transaction hour till late evening and would be open on Saturday and Sunday too while informing the clients that the SBI officials and employees were there to help them in an efficient manner.

Apart from other banks, the post office in Mokokchung also witnessed customers coming for the exchange of the old Rs 500 and 1000 denomination.
