The Arunachal government has taken congnizance of the condition of roads leading to Rajiv Gandhi University, the lone central university at Rono Hills, near Itanagar and the difficulties faced by the commuters, Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein said in Itanagr on Monday. On directives of Chief Minister Pema Khandu, Mein, who also holds the PWD portfolio, called an urgent meeting of the chief engineer, superintendent engineer and executive engineers of the department to take stock of the situation, an official communiqué informed.
He issued specific directives to the engineers to inspect the roads physically and immediately start renovation works for which funds have also been earmarked. A total of Rs 6.5 crore has been earmarked for the road from Bage Tinali to Rajiv Gandhi University while Rs. 10 crore has been earmarked for the stretch of road from Khola-Camp to Gumto.

Underscoring the importance of the road that leads to the state’s premier institutions, Mein instructed the engineers to ensure that the work is undertaken on a time-bound manner without compromising the quality. He also sought weekly report on the progress of work.

Meanwhile, the department has clarified that the stretch of road from Bage Tinali to RGU and Khola-camp to Gumto are defacto highways and meet ‘Other District Roads’ (ODR) standard with limited pavement thickness. These roads are bearing traffic loads beyond its design capacity since last many years aggravated by the torrential rains every year. However, the department has assured that it will take up the restoration work at the earliest depending on the weather conditions, the communiqué added.
