Appeal to the Superintendent of Traffic Police, Dimapur

For the past few days, the traffic police have been stopping Dumper trucks arriving from Chumoukedima-direction and Niuland-road at 4th Mile Crossroad traffic point. The drivers are required to pay 500 INR inorder to pass 4th Mile, which infact is a National Highway 29.

On the first instance, I assumed, it had to be because of odd and even numbering initiated by the government. But I assumed wrong, since the drivers were cited to pay the same amount, the very next day, consecutively.

I know that it’s understandable to cite heavy lorries crossing Purana Bazar between 8AM and 3PM, because of the traffic congestion. But what perplexes me is that every loaded lorry that has to pass 4th Mile, by default, becomes a defaulter and are levied a penalty, although their final destination is only few hundred meters beyond 4th Mile Traffic Point.

I’d sincerely apologise if I am shown a clause in our Constitution that allows the ongoing implementation; or if there is a special clause set by Administration during the present pandemic. But if you find my appeal justifiable, please put a cease to this practice.

Aside from all, I pay my respect to “Traffic Police” specifically in Kohima & Dimapur for their endeavour to ensure that the traffic legislation passed during the present Covid-19 crisis are fulfilled despite the risk to their physical well-being.
