Dimapur, April 24 (EMN): The 12th edition of the annual Guwahati Half Marathon, organised by Techniche – IIT Guwahati, in association with UNICEF Assam, was held on the theme “Run for Child Protection, Stand up with #Youth4Suraksha” on Sunday.
The marathon was conducted in three events namely Glory Run (21 km race for professionals), Spirit Run (6 km race for the citizens of Guwahati) and General Championship (exclusive for schools and colleges), an update informed.
The event started with the 21 km run in the morning at ABITA Stadium Guwahati, Gandhi Basti, followed by the 6 km run for the general public.
The marathon is a running event, organised to promote a better social and human interaction amongst the residents in and around Guwahati. Since its inception in 2009, the event has become the largest half marathon in Northeast India. This year’s event witnessed the participation of over 1500 people.
The marathon is an appeal to the people to be a part of the change for prosperity of society. It urged people to become more responsible for prevalent issues in society, like child labour, child abuse, child trafficking, cyber crimes against children, illiteracy, hunger, and lack of development.
Ashok Kumar Bharali, General Secretary of Assam Athletic Academy, was the marathon’s formal guest of honour. He was joined by Dipak Kumar, Regional Director of NSS, who was the guest of honour in felicitating the winners during the prize ceremony.
