At least seven people are feared killed in a fatal accident which occurred Monday morning on the Assam-Nagaland inter-state highway, one kilometer away from Changki village. The bodies of five, out of the seven feared dead, have been recovered by search parties from Changki village and neighbouring Chungtia village. The accident occurred at around 10am on Monday, when a Mokokchung-bound goods truck (AS-03-AC-5021) coming from Jorhat in Assam plunged off the road and went some 400-500 meters down the hill. This particular stretch of the highway is notorious for its treacherous terrains.
Sources from Changki village told Eastern Mirror that the villagers had to cut a fresh trail round the thick jungles solely to retrieve the dead bodies. The truck had landed so far down the hill that it could not be seen from the highway, it was informed.
Inclement weather conditions, marked with unceasing rainfall for the last couple of days, have rendered search activities all the more difficult. The Changki village council has dispatched all youth under “Azuakhang zunga” (an age-group) to carry out the search activities. They have been detailed to continue their duty tomorrow from 6am.
Police sources have identified the five corpses as those of Sentilemba of Chungtia village residing at New Camp in Mokokchung, his mother-in-law Don Maya, his sisters-in-law Tara and Mon Maya and the driver of the truck Allim Uddin. The ill-fated family had hitched the truck in Mariani, Assam.
The handyman of the truck, Balaji had escaped the accident after managing to jump out of the vehicle when it went off course. He walked to Changki, a kilometer away and managed to the villagers of the accident. He is being treated at a hospital in Jorhat, Assam.
The body of the driver has been taken to Mokokchung for postmortem. The cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained.
