About 10 violent cases using licensed guns reported in last few years, says Biren Singh

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh informed the ongoing assembly that around 10 violent cases including human casualties using licensed guns were reported in the state in the last two-three years.

Biren Singh, who is also in-charge of Home department, was replying to a calling attention by MLAs Vungzagin Valte and Paolienlal Haokip on the reported issuance of notification by District Magistrate, Churachandpur intimating to submit arms licenses along with the arms on the 8th day of the ongoing budget session here.

Later in a tweet, Biren singh wrote, “The process for verification and renewal of arms licenses have been initiated across the state. The state government has launched these measures to curb and prevent incidents of gun-related violence & to ensure that the rule of law prevails in the state.”

He said the order of submitting arms licenses along with the arms was issued not only for a particular district but statewide for the protection and prevention of illegal arms.

He further instructed the District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police to examine the purpose carefully before issuing an arms license. He also informed the House that arms license holders should renew their licenses in the given period of time otherwise it would be considered illegal.

Replying to a question by Congress MLA K Ranjit Singh, the leader of the House also stated that there were a total of 29 fire stations and sub fire stations. Out of which 17 fire stations and substations were functional and 12 fire sub- stations were non- functional. He said that efforts were being made for the 12 non-functional fire stations to be functional and also for setting up of new fire stations/ sub- stations to cover all parts of Manipur in future.

Further, he stated that the Government has conveyed approval for direct recruitment of 122 different categories of posts which is under process in the department.

He mentioned that under expansion of modernisation of Fire Service under 15th Finance Commission of grant- in- aid, a proposal amounting to INR 93,33,86,960 has been proposed for making all the non-functional fire sub-stations and improving the infrastructure and equipment.

While construction of a temporary garage- cum- dormitory for opening of new fire stations, procurement of 16 fire tenders, 16 portable fire pumps and eight bolero campers for mounting fire pumps are under process, he added. Imphal, March 1 (EMN)
