Chakhesang students declare non-cooperation with armed forces over AFSPA extension in Nagaland
DIMAPUR — Taking a strong stance against the recent extension of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act in parts of Nagaland, the Chakhesang Students’ Union (CSU) has directed it affiliates and subordinate units to extend non-cooperation and abstain from any association with the Indian Armed Forces operating under the purview of the AFSPA.
“We shall stand united in our refusal to comply with any directives issued under this draconian law,” it said in a press release on Monday.
This call for non-cooperation comes as a direct response to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) extending the AFSPA on April 1, 2024.
Condemning the action, the CSU argued that the unjust extension only exacerbates the fear and unrest already prevalent in the state.
“The AFSPA grants unbridled power to the armed forces deployed in ‘disturbed areas’, leading to a flagrant disregard for human rights and the rule of law. It perpetuates a climate of fear and intimidation among our people, undermining the very fabric of our society,” the student body asserted.
Further, the CSU expressed solidarity with fellow citizens who have borne the brunt of the Act’s perceived oppressive measures.
Directing its affiliates and subordinate units to extend non-cooperation and abstain from any association with the Indian Armed Forces, it called on the government of the day, to “heed the voices of the people and repeal AFSPA without delay.”
“It is imperative that we restore dignity, justice, and respect for human rights in our beloved state of Nagaland. Let us unite in our resolve to combat oppression and injustice, and work towards a future where the rights and freedoms of all citizens are safeguarded,” it added.
