DIMAPUR — The National Lok Adalat was held in seven district headquarters, namely Dimapur, Kohima, Phek, Peren, Zunheboto, Mokokchung, and Wokha, organised by the respective district legal services authorities (DLSAs) on Saturday.

According to a press release, during these events, seven sitting benches were constituted at each respective district headquarters.

The primary objective of the arrangement is to resolve disputes and cases before they reach the litigation stage, i.e., prior to being filed in court. Additionally, it aimed to settle certain pending cases that are admissible under the Lok Adalat regulations through compromise and amicable means.

A total of 178 cases/disputes were resolved during the Lok Adalat out of the 973 disputes, matters, or cases listed for compromise settlement. These included cases in both the pending stage and pre-litigation stage, primarily falling under categories such as bank recovery, Motor Accident Cases Tribunal (MACT), and other cases such as public utility disputes (e.g., telephone bills) and matrimonial disputes.

The ‘settlement amount’ involved in some of the cases totaled INR 34,15,81,243. The settlement amount refers to the sum mutually agreed upon for payment between the litigants or parties involved in a dispute.

It signifies the amount settled upon by the parties after reaching a consensus, either to resolve damages caused or as a negotiated amount for payment on a claim by a party. The settlement amount encompasses various forms of financial obligations, including fine money, bank recovery money, money suits, and compensation money.

The Lok Adalat was held at the respective district court premises, headed by the chairperson or the secretary of the DLSAs. An MACT case was also taken up through video conferencing for Tuensang DLSA.
