DIMAPUR — Child Rights Movement under the National Domestic Workers’ Movement (NDWM), with the support of Assisi Centre for Integrated Development (ACID) and Nagaland chapter of NDWM, observed ‘Hope Day’ at Assisi School play ground in Dimapur on February 17.

An update from Nagaland NDWM stated that ‘Hope Day’ is observed to spread kindness, hope and encouragement to others. It added that ‘hope is not seen but felt in our hearts.’

Speaking at the event, Advocate Priya Shyam highlighted on the prevalence of substance abuse among the children. While informing that prescribed medicines cannot be taken in excess, she stated that abuse of intoxicating substances could destroy a person’s life.

She called the attention of the parents to communicate with their children and set clear rules and values at home and the reason for avoiding underage drinking or drug use. She has likened children to a wet mud, which could be mould and shaped by creating supportive environment.

She also educated the participants on Section 77 of Juvenile Justice Act, 2015, which guarantees rigorous imprisonment for a term of 7 years with a fine of INR 1 lakh for giving intoxicating liquor or any narcotic drug or tobacco products or psychotropic substance to any child.

The speaker further encouraged the children to keep away from substance abuse and live a healthy life.

Delivering the welcome address, Sr. Pramila, director of ACID, spoke on the significance of the day.

“Many a times we think that children are vulnerable, they have no voice, they cannot think, they cannot decide, but children have the original creativity and newness. Therefore, as we celebrate the Day of Hope let us acknowledge all the things that are done by our children and let us give them the hope that the future is bright and hopeful,” she said.

The programme was chaired by Sr. Jobina, assistant director of ACID.

Altogether, 315 participants including CRM members, parents and domestic workers attended the programme.
