Longtrok Senden Ungma showcases unique Ao culture
Longtrok Senden Ungma perform a AO cultural show at Ungma village
Mokokchung — Longtrok Senden Ungma, popularly known for their visionary approach to imparting Ao cultural values to the younger generation, organised the 38th Sobaliba Sayu Sentong (cultural showcase) at Yimtsungda Arok Sapang in Ungma village under Mokokchung district on July 31.
Imyapangla Jamir, project officer of district rural development agency (DRDA), Mokokchung, was the chief guest of the event. Speaking at the programme, she underscored that such a cultural showcase was a celebration to discover ‘who we are as a people and reminds us the values that bind us together and define our identity.’
“As we come together to preserve and promote our cultural heritage in this rapidly changing world, we should remember the importance of preserving our cultural identity for generations to come,” she said.
She opined that heritage refers to the forefathers’ ways of life, their experiences of good and bad; their achievements and wisdom that have guided them to become who they are today. She added that culture serves as a bridge between generations and helps to stay connected with their roots.
Preserving culture, according to Jamir, should also mean maintaining a balance between cultural values with the modern world while anchoring one’s ethos as their foundation. She added that preserving culture is not only the sole responsibility of an individual but it also included the government, educational institution, community etc.
Jamir also sensitised the gathering on the scope of tourism and cultural heritage as a means of revenue generation. She asserted that communities with unique cultures and traditions often attract tourists.
She further acknowledged the Longtrok Senden Ungma for their visionary approach to promoting and preserving the rich Ao ethos. She added that during the course of 38 years, they have not only imparted a rich legacy to many people but also produced Guru like Sademmeren and Guru Senlitulu on Ao culture and traditions.
The programme witnessed the presentation of traditional rice pounding, cultural dances of various age groups, Ao folksongs and other traditions practised by Ao ancestors.
