RD, PHED organise orientation on JJM and SBM-G

DIMAPUR — Department of Rural Development (RD) and Public Health Engineering (PHED) have jointly organised an orientation and capacity building on implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) and Swachh Bharat Mission – Gramin (SBM-G) in the conference hall of the RD directorate on Tuesday under the chairmanship of the RD director, Azenuo Pienyü.

In his introductory speech, the principal secretary of PHED, E Mhonbemo Patton, informed that JJM is envisioned to provide free universal safe and adequate drinking water through individual household tap connections to all rural households. Towards this, he has stressed on the importance of participation of every village council and its sub-committees to play an active role for successful implementation of the village action plan on water supply and sanitation.

Patton also urged the committees to play a key role in motivating the villagers to contribute towards operational expenses and sustainable maintenance of water supply system in the villages. He further made a fervent appeal to all officers responsible to take the opportunity provided by the GoI and give their best effort in order to benefit the rural areas.

Delivering the welcome address, the commissioner and secretary of RD, Neposo Theluo, mentioned that the mission was launched by the Prime Minister of India on August 15, 2019, with an aim to provide drinking water supply to the rural households through functional household tap connection (FHTC) by 2024 and to provide water connection to public institutions.

Terming it essential for the two departments to work together especially in matters of water related activities and sanitation works, Theluo expressed hope that the orientation would prove to be fruitful in the implementation of JJM and SBM.

The orientation programme was marked by presentation on JJM by N Yanger Pongener, EE (Tech), PHED, followed with another presentation on SBM-G by Ichirang Zeliang, EE (Sanitation & WSSO), PHED.
