Skill development initiatives taken up for displaced persons in Manipur
IMPHAL — In an effort to help displaced people earn even when they are in the relief centres, the Thoubal District Administration in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Thoubal have been conducting various skill development programmes.
On June 28, Deputy Commissioner A Subhash Singh of Thoubal district launched Yenning Candles solely made by the inmates staying at Kodompokpi Sports Complex Relief Centre at Wangjing, 25 km south of Imphal in Manipur.
During the day’s launching programme, Subhash Singh expressed happiness and satisfaction on the success of the candle making programme, encouraging the inmates and the officials of Thoubal district to continue with their hard work to make skill development activities taken up by the government to be a success.
The District Administration in collaboration with KVK has been imparting various skill development activities targeting income generation of the inmates, according to a government statement.
The training programme activities are being led by Senior Scientist and Head, KVK Thoubal, Dr. S Zeshmarani and Subject Matter Specialist, Home Science, KVK Thoubal, RK Lembisana under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner (Thoubal).
Various activities provided to the inmates include awareness programme, demonstration and hands-on training where the raw materials are provided by the district administration and KVK.
In food processing category, pickle and candy making of mango and pineapple is under process along with mushroom cultivation. Incense sticks/Agarbatti made by the inmates will be made available soon in the market.
Currently around 480 inmates are taking shelter at Kodompokpi Sports Complex Relief Centre, Wangjing.
According to officials, about 50,648 displaced persons are staying in 349 relief camps in the state.
