Nagaland: Khonoma village celebrates Thekranyi festival with gusto

KOHIMA — Residents of Khonoma village celebrated Thekranyi Festival at its community hall ‘Terhotsiese’ on Saturday on the theme ‘Excelling in the 21st century.’

Speaking on the occasion, advisor to the chief minister of Nagaland, Abu Metha, called upon all sections of the Naga society to work towards unity. He stated that Thekranyi is a festival celebrated by different peer groups mostly youth annually before paddy activities begin.

Metha mentioned that the coming decades would be understood as ‘Asian century,’ whereby the world’s economy and political power would be shifted to Asian countries, the largest emerging market on earth.

In this context, he has questioned if Nagas are ready to be part of the new economy or should they allow their children to miss the bus.

“Nagas have to rise on the occasion and must make every effort so that our children don’t miss the bus,” said Metha who is also the chairman of the Investment and Development Authority of Nagaland (IDAN).

In this context, he has reminded the need of good leadership in political, civil societies, NGOs, etc. so that they achieve excellence in the upcoming century.

Asserting that people are living in a world which is moving fast with the technological advancements, he underscored on the need to use technology to empower themselves towards achievements.

He has appealed to the Angami community, who are known as ‘big brothers and elders brothers’ to make contributions and sacrifices for others so that they also come at par with them and march forward as a family.

Stating that Khonoma village is not only known in Nagaland but across the globe, he thanked its citizens for their contribution towards the journey of the Naga people and in all walks of life and all sectors of society.

Terming Khonoma as a legendary village with vast potentials, Metha affirmed that the village is already one of the most famous tourist destinations in the country, adding that there are still a lot of potentials and room for improvements to be done for the growth of the village.

Metha also sought the attention of the host of the festival Salhoutuonuo Kruse, minister for Women Resource Development and Horticulture, to relook into the prospect of promoting horticulture in Khonoma.

Metha further assured the people of Khonoma to include Thekranyi festival in state tourism calendar

Also speaking on the occasion, S Keoshu Yimchunger, advisor of Youth Resources and Sports, has assured to look into the growth of Khonoma.
