Diphu, March 30 (EMN): Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC), the regional party of the three hills district of Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong and NC Hills, opposed the agreement signed between the two state governments of Assam and Meghalaya through the ‘give and take’ policy in resolving the inter-state border row.
In a press conference held at ASDC Central Committee office, Diphu on Wednesday, the party president, Chandra Kanta Terang said, ‘the Assam government has claimed that out of 12 disputed areas along the inter-state border with Meghalaya, six have been resolved. The government should clarify, which of the six disputed areas have been resolved’.
Terang said, “Chief ministers of Meghalaya and Assam have recently met Union Home minister Amit Shah in New Delhi and inked an agreement for six disputed areas in Kamrup and Cachar districts bordering Meghalaya by adopting the ‘give and take’ policy. Now the same policy is going to be adopted for Karbi Anglong, which shares the Assam-Meghalaya inter-state boundary’.
This policy is not acceptable and should be in the context of the government notification of 1951 in creation of hill districts in Northeast including Karbi Anglong, North Cachar, Khasi-Jaintia and Mizo hill districts. We will not part with an inch of the Karbi Anglong land, nor will we take land that belongs to others, Terang stated.
The ASDC is also opposed to the declaration of eco-sensitive zones in and around the Kaziranga National Park and nine animal corridors as several areas under Socheng Dhenta, Member of Autonomous Council (MAC) constituency and Duarbagori MAC constituency, he said.
Informing that Karbi Anglong is a Sixth Scheduled area and requires permission from KAAC to acquire land for any purposes, he further informed that KAAC has not issued the No Objection Certificate (NOC) and as such, the government cannot go ahead with the agreement.
