IBM unveils world’s first 2nm processor

Dimapur, May 6 (EMN): Tech giant IBM on Thursday unveiled the world’s first 2nm processor using innovative architecture to squeeze 50 billion transistors on a chip the size of a fingernail.

The company claims that its new 2nm chip technology can deliver a 45 per cent higher performance boost while using 75 per cent less energy than current 7nm-based chips. This means that future production models of 2nm-based processors will enable devices to achieve better performance with improved power efficiency.

“The IBM innovation reflected in this new 2nm chip is essential to the entire semiconductor and IT industry,” Dario Gil, SVP and Director of IBM Research, said in a statement.

“It is the product of IBM‘s approach of taking on hard tech challenges and a demonstration of how breakthroughs can result from sustained investments and a collaborative R&D ecosystem approach,” Gil added.

The 2nm design demonstrates the advanced scaling of semiconductors using IBM‘s nanosheet technology. Its architecture is an industry first, the company said.

Mobile devices using 2nm-based processors could have four times the battery life current devices have. IBM claims that users might only need to charge their devices every four days.

According to IBM, the new 2nm chip technology would be ideal for data centres to reduce the carbon footprint. The technology would also benefit space exploration, artificial intelligence, 5G/6G tech and quantum computing, the company said.
