Kohima, April 17 (EMN): As many as 44 fire calls were received in Kohima district alone this year, with 25 of them detected in the month of March, which was the highest number of calls received in 2021.
This was informed by Neiketou Sopfü, SI and OC of North Fire Station, at a programme organised by the Nagaland Fire and Emergency Services (NFES) at Naga Solidarity Park in Kohima on Saturday.
The programme included a lecture and demonstration on fire prevention and protection with representatives from offices in Kohima district and colonies.
The police officer said that Saturday’s programme was part of observation of the fire service week with activities involving students and a cyclothon to spread awareness. He added that ‘fire service requires everyone’s support and participation’.
He informed that around 15 fire calls were received during January-February, while four fire calls have been received so far in the month of April, although there were less fire calls in 2020.
The official maintained that due to lockdown last year, less fire calls were received and ‘carelessness’ was one of the main causes of fire incidents, especially caused by Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG), faulty wire and electrical appliances.
He reminded the participants to be careful when using electrical appliances and gas.
Meanwhile, the OC of South Fire Station, Inspector Sedevizo Hibo, said fire service week is observed every year from April 14 to the 20th following the Bombay Warship Fire incident on April 14, 1944 that took a heavy toll on the fire service personnel.
He added that the commemoration of fire service week was also to pay homage to those who had laid down their lives while on the line of duty.
Hibo maintained that the department felt it was necessary to sensitise the citizens on how to prevent the initial fire and advised the people to keep fire extinguishers for safety.
The participants were imparted with the classification of fire and handling of extinguishers by ASI Menose Zashumo; gas fire control methodologies and demonstration by ASI Dzesengutuo Keyho; demonstration on search and rescue technique by SI Inake; dos and don’ts by SI Thepfükranyu; and fire tender demonstration by SI Chumbemo Patton.
