Dimapur, March 2 (EMN): Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation (NVCO) along with Kohima Law College (KLC) launched a two-week celebration of ‘World Consumer Rights Day’ at the college premises on March 2. NVCO president Kezhokhoto Savi officially launched the programme on the theme “Tackling plastic pollution.”
To mark the celebration, NVCO along with KLC final year students conducted a special awareness session to reduce plastic pollution and engage the citizens/ consumers to adopt and promote more sustainable practices, an update from NVCO media cell stated.
Presenting a talk on the theme, Savi underlined the necessity of plastic in daily lives. He, however, stated that consumption and production of plastics, especially single-use plastics, have become unsustainable as it is impacting the ecosystems causing negative environmental consequences including pollution of the local and international environment and threatening human health. He therefore stated that it requires coordinated efforts to tackle plastic pollution.
Savi encouraged the consumers to be more concerned about plastic pollution and ready to take action by way of using reusable bags when shopping, using refillable drinking bottles etc. He further suggested systematic change at all levels from governments, business and standard setters towards tackling plastic pollution.
With the official launch, the team has decided to create awareness at different levels covering topics such as consumer rights, environment protection, human rights, state consumer helpline with toll free No.1800-345-3701, tackling plastic pollution, food safety, food security etc by following government SOP.
Report added that the team would be given priority to churches especially the youth departments considering the important role of youth.
