Nearly 13% of married women in Nagaland have experienced spousal violence

In Nagaland, 12.7% of ever-married women have experienced spousal violence, with 13.6 % in rural areas and 11.3% in urban areas.

This was stated in the Health and Family Welfare statistics in India 2019-2020 report on survey findings of some important indicators of Health and Family Welfare: National Family Health Survey (NFHS) 2015-2016.

It was also reported that Manipur had the highest percentage of spousal violence with 53.15 % of ever-married women having experienced violence, where 56.1% of women from rural areas and 48% of women in urban areas have experienced spousal violence.

Sikkim had the lowest with 2.0%— 4.2% in rural areas and 0.4% in urban areas experiencing spousal violence.

Report also shows that 1.95% of ever-married women in Nagaland have experienced violence during pregnancy period, where 2.8% of women in rural and 0.4% of women in urban areas have experienced violence.

NFHS is conducted periodically under the stewardship of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to generate data on important demographic and health indicators.

In Nagaland, it was also reported that 763 ever-married women and 402 never-married women aged 14 to 49 years have experienced physical and sexual violence as per the 2015-16 survey.

The person committing physical violence includes current/former husband, father/stepfather, mother/stepmother, sister, brother, relatives, former boyfriend, mother-in-law, teacher and others.

The report informed that all women were asked about their experience of physical violence since age 15. Ever-married women were also asked about their experience of spousal physical violence at any age.
