Dimapur, June 27 (EMN): A youth from Nagaland has been detained in Gujarat for act of animal cruelty after a video clip taken by him was widely circulated on social media platforms.
The 21-year-old youth, identified as Khumkili Rolongse Sangtam, was booked under IPC Section 429 and Animal Cruelty Act, according to The Times of India. He was reportedly working at a resort in Adipur town of Kutch, Gujarat.
The police said that Sangtam strangulated the pup he was raising as it soiled his room.
However, a member of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) saw the video and brought it to the notice of the Gandhidham police, leading to his detention from the resort on Friday, said the report.
“The SP ordered Adipur sub-inspector N K Chaudhary to probe into the matter and Sangtam was arrested from the resort. Chaudhary became the complainant in the case and booked the accused under sections 429, 11 (1) (A), 11 (1) (I) of Indian Penal Code dealing with cruelty against animals,” an official was quoted as saying by The Times of India.
“At present, we have kept him under detention. We will formally arrest him once his Covid-19 test is done,” added the official.
