Forty six persons were arrested today at Theyvadur village in the district for allegedly conducting the bull-taming sport of ‘Jallikattu’ in
violation of the Supreme Court order.
The villagers first brought the bulls to the temples for the traditional pooja before the Jallikattu event, but the move was objected by the police after which they were released. As the bulls were being driven out, a Sub-Inspector sustained a minor injury in the melee, police said.
The accused have been booked under various sections of the IPC, including 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) and 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of duty). The Supreme Court had last year banned using bulls for Jallikattu or bullock-cart races across the country and directed governments and Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) to take steps to prevent the infliction of unnecessary pain or suffering on animals.
It had said all living creatures, including animals have inherent dignity and a right to live peacefully and right to protect their well-being. The sport is known as ‘Eruthattam’ in local parlance.
