DIMAPUR, MARCH 10

WHILE intensifying crack down on the encroachers from Nagaland, Assam police today arrested 40 persons from Nagaland in the border area.
Sources said the Assam police swooped down on the Nagaland encroachers at Kashiram Sector and Rangapahar area today and arrested 40 Nagas. The first incident at Kashiram took place in the morning while the Rangapahar area incident took place in the afternoon.Reports said all the arrested persons from Nagaland are now in the custody of Diphu police station, Karbi Anglong district of Assam. These 40 land encroachers from Nagaland will be produced in the court in Diphu tomorrow, the reports added.
Today’s incident was a second such crack-down by the security force personnel on land encroachers of Nagaland after the recent flare-up on the border row.
On March 1, Nagaland security force personnel came down heavily on the people from Nagaland encroaching the Assam land when the IRB (Indian Reserve Battalion) personnel resorted to blank-fires in the Nagaland side of the border adjacent to Shankar Tila border outpost of Assam police.
The IRB personnel’s action came a day after the indefinite economic embargo was provisionally lifted by agitating civil societies of Karbi Anglong district (Assam) demanding proper step by Nagaland Government to stop massive encroachment of forest land inside Karbi Anglong district in Assam.
The IRB personnel while chasing away the encroachers also caught 8 persons from the spot who were later formally arrested and taken to Dimapur. After the incident Nagaland IRB personnel have intensified patrolling near the Shankar Tila sector to avoid further incident.
Assam police and CRPF were deployed in the sensitive areas across Karbi Anglong and Dimapur by Karbi Anglong administration after the firing incident and both government is monitoring the situation closely.
Last month end, the indefinite economic blockade against Nagaland was lifted following the assurances from the district administration of both Assam’s Karbi Anglong district and Nagaland’s Dimapur district administration that they will look into the border impasse.
The indefinite economic blockade against Nagaland in both the National Highway 39 and NH-36 since February 25 was imposed by Karbi Students and Youth Council (KSYC), All Dimasa Students’ Union (ADSU), All Assam Gurkha Students’ Union (AAGSU), Karbi Unemployed Youth Association (KUYA), KSA, ADSU, AAGSU, Karbi Re-Awakening Organisation (KRAO) and United Students Union of Karbi Anglong (USUKA) in protest against the alleged encroachment of Assam’s territory by people from Nagaland side.
The Karbi Anglong based agitating organisations took a joint decision to lift the indefinite blockade against Nagaland after assurances were given by the administrations of both Karbi Anglong (Assam) and Dimapur (Nagaland) that appropriate step will be initiated by Assam and Nagaland governments to prevent alleged encroachment of Assam’s land by people of Nagaland side.
Both the Karbi Anglong district administration and Dimapur administration have also assured to give maximum efforts in maintaining peace in the trouble torn border eares of Assam and Nagaland.
