The 33 Assam Rifles today tendered apology over the June 14 incident. AR jawans in civilian clothes beat up the Angh of Yannu village in Tizit sub-division under Mon district for not heeding their dictat while he was walking back home at night.
The apology was tendered during a joint meeting held with Konyak Union, Tizit Area Students Union (TASU), Yannu Village Council and Yannu Students Union at AR camp in Tizit today. The AR acknowledged the incident to be a misconduct on its part for not verifying the identity of the victim. They gave assurances that such incidents would not occur in future and that they will ensure that the faith of the people is restored. The AR also offered to bear all medical expenses of the victim.
The incident has provoked a strong reaction from the student bodies saying that the troops are there for public safety and any physical assault or torture will not be tolerated within the Tizit jurisdiction.
