Dimapur, Jan. 16 (EMN):
Several civil society organisations from Peren town have condemned the gun firing in public, allegedly by two Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) personnel on Thursday, and demanded the authorities to terminate their services.

The organisations through a press release, accused one havildar Tohovi and constable Kakuto of 13th IRB of “rampant firing in the busy market place and endangering the lives of the public and innocent bystanders and passersby.”

The Peren police station, when contacted, confirmed to Eastern Mirror that the firing incident took place at around 1:45 pm on Thursday when the two IRB personnel were on duty. It added that the accused were immediately apprehended and kept at the “quarter guard” for further inquiry.

The police also confirmed that medical examination revealed the two accused were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.

‘Police personnel are supposed to safeguard and protect the lives of the public and not endanger them. Therefore, we demand the higher authority in the police department to terminate the services of the two IRB personnel involved in the firing incident at Peren town market place on the 16th January 2020 evening around 1:30 to 2:00 pm,’ read the press release by civil society organisations.

“Failing to terminate the services of the two erring IRB personnel by the higher authority within 72 hours, further form of agitation and protest will follow until they are terminated from their services and any untoward incident arising out of it will solely be the responsibility of the concerned department and authority,” it warned.
