12th Hockey India Sub-Junior Women National Championship 2022 from today

Imphal, May 10 (EMN): Manipur will be hosting the 12th Hockey India Sub-Junior Women National Championship 2022 at Khuman Lampak Hockey Stadium in Imphal from May 11 to the 22nd.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh accompanied by the minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Govindas Konthoujam and president of Hockey India Gyanendro Ningombam, besides president of Manipur hockey Dr. Basudev and commissioner (sports) SS Chhabra will inaugurate the 12-day championship at 3 pm on May 11.

Teams from 24 states and union territories will be participating in the championship, which has been categorised into eight groups. Matches will be played in daylight as well as under floodlights.

The participating teams are divided into eight pools. Pool A has teams from Haryana, Bengal, Jammu & Kashmir while in Pool B are Jharkhand, Manipur, Kerala; and in Pool C are Uttar Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Gujarat. 

In Pool D are Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand while in Pool E are Delhi, Maharashtra, Assam; and Pool F have Tamil Nadu, Chandigarh, Arunachal Pradesh.

Teams from Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh are in Pool G and in Pool H are Bihar, Karnataka, Mizoram and Telangana.

Speaking to Eastern Mirror on the eve of the national championship, Gyanendro Ningombam said that the steps are also on for the development of hockey in the Northeastern states.

Meanwhile, secretary of organising committee Laimayum Basanta, briefing journalists sought cooperation from the masses in promoting hockey in the country particularly in the Northeast. Manipur has so far produced 19 Olympians including seven in hockey.

 The opening match on Wednesday will have host Manipur Hockey taking on Kerala Hockey at 5.30 pm to be played under the floodlight.

After seven days of pool matches, the quarter-finals will be played on May 19, the semi-finals will be held on May 21. The medal matches for the Hockey India Sub-Junior Women National Championship 2022 are scheduled for May 22.
