Imphal, Mar. 1: The residents of Chingmeirong locality in poll-bound Manipur’s state capital were treated to a surprise when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president Amit Shah visited their neighbourhood in an impromptu house-to-house election campaign on Wednesday morning. Manipur goes to poll on March 4 and 8. Shah, accompanied by Union HRD minister Prakash Javadekar and BJP Manipur president Kh Bhabananda, also distributed the vision document of the party during his visit to about half a dozen houses at Chingmeirong Mamang Leikai under Wangkhei constituency where MLA Yumkham Erabot is contesting on BJP ticket. Elders who could not interact with the BJP chief in Hindi were assisted by their sons and daughters during the day’s 30 minute campaign which began at around 8.30 am.Reacting to the day's house-to-house campaign, former minister Erabot said that it was indeed a surprising move when the president of a national party in power announced that he will also join the house-to-house campaign in the constituency. “This shows that the party wants to understand the sentiments of the people by visiting its people in person unlike other parties which overlook the grassroots workers. I feel proud of it," he said. Union HRD minister Prakash Javadekar who is also in-charge of the elections in Manipur shared similar sentiments. BJP national president Amit Shah who was here on a 2-day visit to take part in election campaigns for the party also addressed election rallies at Ukhrul, a hill town, about 84 km north of Imphal and Yumnam Leikai in Imphal prior to his departure for the national capital on Wednesday afternoon. At the rallies, he came down heavily on the ruling Congress government in Manipur alleging that the Congress government in the state did not undertake any development works during its 15-years rule.
