Manipur students, women want ‘clear stand’ of Rajya Sabha MP on CAB

Imphal, Jan. 24 (EMN): Students and womenfolk of Manipur wanted Rajya Sabha MP Kh Bhabananda who is also the president of Bharatiya Janata Party Manipur Pradesh to make his stand clear to the public on Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.
A group of students and women on Thursday submitted a memorandum to the MP at his residence, Keishampat Thokchom Leikai in Imphal, urging him to make stand clear to the public at the capacity of being the president of BJP Manipur Pradesh and Rajya Sabha MP.
“In response, the MP assured to work in accordance with the sentiment of the people. But he did not give us a written assurance,” said a student leader after submitting the memorandum.
Meanwhile, representatives of the six student’s bodies-All Manipur Students’ Union,All Manipur Students’ Union, Manipuri Students’ Federation,Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur, Students’ Union of Kangleipak, Kangleipak Students’ Association and Apunba Ereipakki Maheiroi Sinpang Lup informed that a team of students from the state will join a demonstration against Bill in national capital on January 30 as part of intensifying ongoing protest against the Citizenship Bill in the region.
The Socialist Students Union of Manipur, All Manipur Muslim Students’ Organisation, Manipur Students’ Association of Delhi and Reformist Students Union of Manipur have announced to launch intense form of agitation if the Bill is passed in the Rajya Sabha.
The College Students’ Unions in Manipur also resolved to boycott Republic Day celebration on January 26 in protest against the Bill.
Representatives of the students’ unions appealed to the people of Manipur and Northeast to unite and work collectively against the Bill.
Manipur CM calls meeting of political parties
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has called a meeting of all political parties in the state on January 29 to discuss the Citizenship Amendment Bill even as protests against the Bill continue in the state.
The chief minister’s media advisor, Irengbam Arun Thursday said the CM has called the meeting at his official residence here on January 29 morning to discuss the Bill.
MPP president O Jugindro had earlier said his party would oppose the Bill tooth and nail. He said the Bill, if passed in the Rajya Sabha, would reduce the population of indigenous people of the northeastern states, including Manipur, to “microscopic minority”.
The chief minister has earlier said the Bill will have no effect on the state.
