Manipur observes World Migratory Bird Day at Azuram

Imphal, May 11 (EMN): The first ever World Migratory Bird Day was held at Azuram village, a remote village under Tousem sub-division in Manipur’s Tamenglong district on Saturday.
Azuram is one of the villages, recognised and appreciated by UN Environment and Convention on Migratory Species on the conservation of Migratory Birds of prey in Africa and Eurasia for providing “refuge and safe passage to all Amur Falcons (Falco amurensis) during their annual migration through Manipur which enhances the biodiversity and enriches the lives of citizens of at least 20 other countries along the falcons flyway.” It is also one of the first villages to come forward for community reserve forest in the region.
The day’s event which was initiated by the village youth club and village authority was attended by sstudents, youth, church leaders and women community of the village.
The Corbett Foundation (TCF) which has been working in the field of conservation at Dailong Biodiversity Heritage Site also took part in the event and gave awareness to the community about the importance of free plastic environment for migratory birds.
TCF Program Officer Mordecai Panmei and member of Rainforest Club Tamenglong (RCT), who is also a community felicitator, Dilunang Pamei took the initiative of giving awareness and assisting the community in observing and identifying birds in the village.
Giving awareness to the community about the importance of birds in the ecosystem, Mordecai advised the villagers to plant more trees.
Village council head, Lungchung Riamei said that God gave so much importance to bird in the Bible and as Christian one should conserve the same.
Youth club president, Adin Riamei encouraged the villagers to maintain cleanliness and ensure that the village is free of plastic.
