IMPHAL, JUL 30:Â Bandh and blockade hit Manipur's main National Highway 39 has been cut off with the rest of the country after heavy landslide
at Maram area in Senapati district. The other National Highway 53 connecting the state with Silchar side has also been affected due to mudslides at Tupul area in Tamenglong district for the past 24 hours.
The Imphal-Mao section of the NH-39 has been cut off due to landslide at Maram bazaar around 80 km north of here in Senapati district due to heavy rainfall in the last few days.
In the landslide, about 80 meter of the stretch of the NH-39 has been pushed down.
The landslide occurred on Thursday morning at around 7.30 am, cutting off the road totally. Many vehicles are stranded on both sides of the stretch due to this.
Among the stranded vehicles are loaded trucks heading towards Imphal and empty trucks heading towards Dimapur. The part of the hilly portion including the road has been brought down in the landslide, an official report received here said adding that around 80 metre length portion of the highway has been pushed down.
At some portion, the road has been pushed down around 100 meter deep. Before the landslide occurred, around 108 loaded trucks from Dimapur side had crossed the area and headed for Imphal which is against the decision of the Transporters and Drivers' Council who has warned many times not to ply the NH-39.
An official team led by local MLA K Rain visited the area yesterday.
"Due to the continuous rain, the road could not be cleared," Maram Students Union president Pungdi said over phone.
However, some of the empty trucks managed to pass the route through another slippery alternative route via 22 Assam Rifles campus above the sinking zone area, he said.
Sources said the repairing or clearing of the highway will take at least two to three days.
On the other hand, nearly 200 families have been affected by the mudslide in Tamenglong district of Manipur.
According to information received here, 168-odd families of Tupul area in Tamenglong district along the Imphal-Jiribam sector of NH 53 have been affected by the mudslide.
In addition to this, 116 hectares of paddy fields have also been affected by the slide. The mudslide was caused by the construction of the Jiribam-Tupul railway line, sources added
